The Biodiverse Green Roof System recreates UK brownfield ecology on the rooftop. Instead of a uniform sedum mat, it uses varied substrate depth (80–200 mm), native wildflower seed mixes, log piles, sand patches and bare gravel zones to create habitat for invertebrates, ground-nesting birds and pollinators. How much BNG uplift does a biodiverse green roof deliver?
Biodiverse roofs typically score Medium or High distinctiveness in the DEFRA BNG metric, contributing meaningful biodiversity units. Exact uplift depends on the area, condition and ecologist assessment. We can supply data sheets to support your BNG calculation.
What plants are in the wildflower mix?
The standard mix includes 20+ UK native species selected for thin-substrate rooftop conditions - yarrow, bird's-foot trefoil, kidney vetch, wild marjoram, oxeye daisy, viper's bugloss and more. Custom mixes available for specific habitat targets.
Is this the same as a 'brown roof'?
Yes and no. A pure brown roof uses spoil and rubble from the site with natural colonisation. Our Biodiverse system goes further - engineered substrate plus seeded wildflower establishment gives faster, more reliable habitat creation while keeping the same ecological intent.
